In the urban scenes of Park, Sang-hee, there are some tones created by different elements conflicting inside the city illuminated by artificial lightings. There are street lightings of its illumination spreading out crashing into the darkness, and the sense of existence of fluorescent letters in contrast to the monotonous silhouettes of buildings. Being contrasted to the quadrilateral windows and standing out white headlight points of cars, the outlines of passengers are shadowed by the dark background. In her works, the streets are such clamor with boisterous lights, but there are lonely feelings within them. Park, Sang-hee has been exploring this kind of goulashes derived from the rapid growth embedded by the city and its alienation through her original unique expressions. .<\/p>\n

Nowadays, as nearly unlimited freedom has been acquired in terms of formality and the boundary between genres being collapsed, use of sheet papers also can be understood as an attempt to get away from the conventional methods of paintings defined by the colors. However, through deeper introspection, the sheet paper has its meanings more than just a new method of express in use of industrial materials. From her early days as an artist, Park, Sang-hee has re-interpreted the sectional looks of the stereotyped urban life with such as movie posters, public media images like a cartoon character, or signboards of Chinese restaurants and the fast food franchises. This artist\u2019s interest in formulaic images naturally shifts to the society of mass production of these images, to the environment of life itself, and allows the urban scenes filled with signboards find their places in the screen. The directness that has been picturing a signboard in use of its materials is deemed as being gradually expanded and unfolding further in terms of subjectivity and formality. The presence of sheet papers that are the actual materials to decorate surfaces of signboards as convenient consumables, are contained in her works of urban night scenes. This fast tempo consumption and direct utilization embracing material createsthe inherent sensitivity of the work itself, and further forms a ring between the social context in which the work is created due to its nature as the byproduct of modernization and the contents of such work. The screen functions as a contact point that connects and separates simultaneously the inside and the outside of the work. .<\/p>\n

Park, Sang-hee draws the shape on a vinyl screen with acrylic colors, and then makes partial incisions using a blade on the surface, peeling it to compose the screen manually. Her work is not the precise and thorough tailoring but is to leave the trace of what her hands feel, revealing them just as they are, sometimes like expressive drawings and sometimes like sharp etchings. As results, there are creations of subtle depth that stimulate the sense of touch. This sense of touch refreshes the sights with the material itself in contrast to the reproduced images. Especially, the frequently discovered pattern in teeth of comb print emphasizes the surface properties even more. The reproductivity based on the law of perspectives for distance is being disturbed by the superficial sense of touch. The eye\u2019s sight that enters into the screen following the reproduced illusion stops at odd moments and is contained in every winding. The visual and material boundaries formed between the viewers and the images by the intaglio engraved surface, are also connected with the psychological heterogeneity transferred by her urban scenes<\/p>\n

What lies in the center of recent works manifesting the diverse scenes of several Asian cities including Korea, is not any specific building or person, or event but the scene itself in which the artificial lights illuminate in the darkness. What stands out of it is the cluster of lights, while the universal components that make a city mix into the background as shadowed fading in silhouette. This cluster of lights creates each different faces of cities. Unlike the daylight that shines upon the world equally, the night lights are not homogeneous. The endless stories made by countless people are melted into the cluster of urban lights, creating the inherent colors glittering together. The artist who has been compelled to these \u201c\u00a1\u00b0Being different\u201d\u00a1\u00b1keep repeating her drawings of the night lights and through the process, the consistent contemporary urban emotions are being captured as they penetrate through individuality and heterogeneity. The place inside the picture may be a part from megalopolis of Seoul or a street corner of red lighted Hong Kong but also it is a scene of sensitivity we may have passed by at somewhere and at sometime.<\/p>\n
The city contained in the works of Park, Sang-hee is not the city of widely awakened daylight but the city of night. Yet the city of night also does not in sleep. Even after the darkness covers down, the lightings of signboards illuminating the night resplendently with their explicit colors visualize the squirming emotions inside the city as raw as they can be. The lights being emitted passing through the plastic screens produce the spectra of diversified emotions.
