<Under the Skin> 잇다스페이스, 인천
이번 잇다스페이스(Itta space)의 박상희 개인전 ‘Under the Skin’은 회화와 시트지의 결합을 통해 작가에게만 가능한 평면 부조의 회화 영역을 확장하는 시도를 보여주고 있다. 캔버스에 배경색을 칠한 후 시트지를 붙이고 그 위에 이미지들을 그린 후 칼로 오려내는 방식으로 그리는 작가는 이번 전시에서도 야경의 도시풍경과 투명한 셀로판지를 전면에 내세우는 등 다양한 작업의 형식들을 선보인다. 작가는 화면에 상처를 내고, 그 상처 밑으로 배경색들이 드러나게 하는 이중의 레이어 방식을 취한다. 드러난 것과 드러나지 않은 것이 서로 개입하면서 새로운 회화적인 표면이 탄생한다. 마치 부조처럼 보이는 조각적 제작방식으로 인해 화면 전체에 파편적으로 드러나는 선과 이미지들은 재현과 추상이 뒤섞인다. 동시에 이 작업은 전시장 전체를 캔버스 화 하려는 시도를 담고 있다.
이번 전시 Under the Skin은 시트지 위에 그리는 풍경의 재현화 작업들은 유용하지만 재료 자체에 대한 고찰에 중점을 둬 캔버스 위에 추상적으로 시트지가 여러 장 겹쳐지는 입체의 캔버스 작품들이 공존하는 회화적 형식 실험을 하고 있다. 풍경을 촉각적으로 보여지게 사용된 시트지라는 도시 건축 부산물이 이번 신작에서는 어떠한 풍경이나 이미지 없이 그 자체로 오려내기와 붙이기로 또 다른 회화의 깊이를 보여준다. 또한 잇다스페이스의 오래된 건축물을 활용한 작업들도 있어 공간과 작품의 묘한 조화가 특별한 분위기를 연출한다.
전시를 보는 관람자들은 시트지라는 재료에 대한 섬세한 접근을 통해 단조로운 색감과 겹겹이 쌓이거나 벗겨진 채 투명하고 얇은 표면에 잠들어 있던 다층적 감각이 혼용되는 신선한 경험을 하게 될 것이다. 재현을 위한 회화에서 탈주한 형식적 실험은 그녀의 지난 회화에서 시작하여 해체 및 재구성, 확장함으로 그녀에게만 가능한 회화 재료적 실험이자 언어적 가능성을 보여주고 있다.
Sanghee Park’s solo exhibition at Itta Space, Under The Skin, shows the artist’s unique attempt to extend the field of painting by building it into three-dimensions by using a combination of sheets. Painting the background on canvas, adding sheets, depicting images on them, and cutting with a knife, the artist again introduces various forms of painting with the emphasis on the night view of a city and the material of cellophane paper. The artist leaves these scars on the work and reveals the background colors underneath them in the style of double layers. Something revealed and not revealed intervenes to create a new style of painting a surface. The fragmentally revealed lines and images on the surface from this sculpture-like way of working (reminding us of the process of making sculpture) are a mix of representation and abstraction. It can be also seen as an attempt to treat the whole exhibition space as a canvas.
The representative paintings of the night view with sheets in this exhibition, Under The Skin, experiment with this painting style by focusing on the materials as the depiction exists but in the abstract form with the layers of sheets. The by-product of a city’s construction, a sheet, is used to show a scene tactually by being added to and cut without specific images, which results in another depth to the painting. Moreover, there are the works using the old building of Itta Space, leading to a unique atmosphere from the odd combination of the artworks and space.
